This super cute DIY Cactus Pin Cushion is so simple to make even a beginning sewer can make one.
I have been dreaming up a cute cactus pin cushion for a while now and the other day when I was done cutting my fabric alphabet on my Cricut Maker, I decided to cut out a couple of these cuties. If you don’t have a Cricut Maker you seriously need one in your life. It cuts fabric like butter and is so addicting you’ll want to cut all the things. I’m serious. I can not say enough good things about it.
Anyway, back to the cacti. I whipped up a cut file and cut them out. My original turned out a bit on the bigger side, so I made a smaller one too. They are so easy to make you can do it in less than 30 minutes.
- Cactus Pin Cushion pattern – large small
- Cricut Felt
- Stuffing – polyfill or crushed walnut shells
- Terracotta plate
- Hot glue gun
- Sewing Machine
- Cricut Maker
- Cricut Fabric Mat
For the cactus, I cut it out of fleece. You can use whatever material you like. Fleece is what I had on hand. I am not sure of the color names, but these both came from Joann’s and have been in my stash for a while.
Once you have it cut you will have six pieces of the cactus. Place in stacks of two with wrong sides together. Sew around the edge at 1/4″ leaving the bottom open. You can use whatever color thread you like. It will not be visible in the final project. Repeat two more times until you have three pieces of the cactus.
Now you will stack all of them into one pile. Make sure the tops are lined up and start from there sewing down the middle of the petals.
The cactus is now assembled and you have six little pockets to stuff with your stuffing.
I used polyfill, but you could use walnut shells to help sharpen your needles every time you poke them back into the cactus.
Hot glue your cactus into the terracotta plate. I picked mine up at Joann’s in the floral department for around a dollar.
I cut the flower out of Cricut felt. Then I rolled it all up and hot glued it together. I then hot glued it to the top of the cactus. You won’t want to stick pins into the flower because of the hot glue, but you can stick them all over the cactus.
How cute would this cactus look with a couple of those pretty flower head quilting pins sticking out of it?
