Scarves are one of my favorite fall accessories. So I thought it would be fun to put together a series of scarf tutorials. So once a week for the next eleven weeks I will posting a new scarf. There is an assortment of crochet, knit, and sewn scarves. It’s so fun to have a bunch to choose from. They are all pretty quick projects as well so they would make easy, last minute gifts. Let’s get started shall we?
Crochet Cable Cowl
Materials
Bulky yarn or two strands of a worsted yarn
P / 10 mm hook
Yarn needle
ch – chain stitch
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
fpdc – front post double crochet {great video tutorial on this stitch here}
slst – slip stitch
( ) – row stitch count
Pattern
Row 1: Chain 50, slst into first stitch to create a round. (50)
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), dc in each stitch around, slst into the top stitch of the chain 2. (50)
Row 3 – 7: Ch 1, fpdc around each dc from the previous row starting directly below your ch 1, slst into the top stitch of the chain 1. (50)
Row 8: Ch 1, *fpdc around 8 dc from the previous row starting directly below your ch 1, fpdc around the next 2 dc from the previous row*, continue from * to *around, slst into the chain 1. (45)
Row 9 – 11: Ch 1, fpdc around each dc from the previous row starting directly below your ch 1, slst into the top stitch of the chain 1. (45)
Row 12: Ch 1, *fpdc around 7 dc from the previous row starting directly below your ch 1, fpdc around the next 2 dc from the previous row*, continue from * to *around, slst into the chain 1. (40)
Row 13: Ch 1, sc around, slst into the chain 1 and fasten off. (40)
Weave in ends and wear.
Note: You can increase the size by simply increasing the initial chain length in 10 stitch increments.
I used two strands of Caron’s Simply Soft in Soft Green since it is only a worsted weight. This cowl can be worn either way. One side the cables will run vertical and the other they will run horizontal.

Did you make this scarf? I’d love to see your project on ravelry! Or share it via social media with the hashtag #ambersimmonsblog.
New to crochet? Check out my Learn to Crochet series!
I love it. THis is the year I say I learn how to crochet
Do it! There are so many great videos. The hardest part is really learning to keep the tension to keep your stitches even, and that’s just going to take practice. Once you learn you can make anything! Check out ravelry.com. So many patterns!
So pretty – I have no crochet skills but I love looking at what everyone else makes – great job!
Okay, I’m not a very crafty person, but this scarf is darling! I may just venture out of my comfort zone and give it a shot.
Very pretty! You’ve been busy creating cute stuff again! 😀
I have been wanting to learn to crochet for so long. Got my supplies, here goes nothing!
XO,
Steph
Okay, already I have a question. LOL! After I do row 1, approx what should the circumference of my round be? Mine is approx 15.7 inches (5″ diameter), but it looks so small …
It is a fairly narrow cowl. I just measured mine and bottom row is about 26 inches around. A 5 inch diameter does sound a little small. Maybe try increasing the stitch count? You can make it bigger by adding 10 stitch increments.
Wondferful. Thank you.
I was really intimated by the fpdc, but the video link really helped. I just started row 8, and now I’m lost. After the 8 fpdc and I moving down to the row below that? I wish there was a photo of what that looks like…I really hope I can finish this. It’s beautiful and I hope to make a few for Christmas gifts.
After the 8 fpdc you simply go around posts 9 and 10 to make one fpdc on the current row. Thus decreasing by one stitch each time you do so.
Thank you so much!
I’m stuck on row 8. Can you help me out please. Thank you
Rach
Basically you are decreasing. 8 fpdc, then you go around two posts to create the next fpdc. Does that make sense?
