So there I was, surfing Pinterest looking for healthy meals to add to my menu plan. I wanted some quick, easy soups to mix in my Blendtec and toss in the freezer to be reheated whenever I was hungry. What I found was so much more.
I happened upon a pin that took me to Uncooking 101, a raw recipe directory. I looked at my soup recipe. Then I looked at a few more recipes. What is a raw recipe exactly? How can you have a recipe if you aren’t cooking? I had heard of the raw diet before, but I thought it was just for “those” crazy people. The people who took being vegan to an extreme level. I mean, you don’t cook your food? Ever? That’s just weird. But as I looked through these recipes I thought to myself, This is stuff I would actually eat. And like. That got the wheels a turnin’.
I have been eating cleaner. I wouldn’t say my diet is clean. But I am more aware of what I am eating. I would really like to take it to the next level though, and eat an even healthier, more plant based diet. I even watched a bunch of food documentaries earlier this year on Netflix including Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead and Forks Over Knives, as well as several others. Did you know that the acronym for the Standard American Diet is SAD? If that’s not ironic, I don’t know what is.
But one point from those documentaries really stuck out to me. It was a quote from the Dr. Esselstyn in the Forks Over Knives extended interviews.
So then, how extreme is it really to eat a raw food diet? I don’t think it’s extreme at all. Not any more. So I’m willing to give it a go. At least for a week. What do I have to lose?
Supposed benefits of eating raw include:
- More energy
- Better digestion
- Healthy weight loss
- Clear skin
- Clear eyes
- Balanced mood
- Detox and cleanse
- Boost the immune system
So what does someone on a raw food diet eat?
I’m hoping that this challenge will help transition me to the more plant based diet that I would like to be consuming, as well as to act like a pre holiday season cleanse. Who knows? I could love it and stick with it. Probably not, since I love meat. But at the very least I am sure I will find some new recipes to add to my rotation.
My friend Katie over at Clarks Condensed and I decided to challenge ourselves to eat raw for one week. We will each be creating our one week meal plan, along with a shopping list and cost analysis of going raw for a week. We will be doing this challenge sometime next month. I can’t wait to give it a try.
If you are interested in joining leave a comment with your email address and I’ll email you the details once they get all worked out. Worst case scenario you get a little more fruit and veggies in your diet, which is something that many of us, myself included, could use. How about it? Will you take the RawSome Challenge?
Awesome!! I love it – I have a close friend that went raw vegan for a while – it was pretty hard core! I also have another friend who is a raw food chef. My husband and I have tried to eat more raw, but have been slacking – this will be a great series to follow. Thank you!
I LOVE this challenge! I want to do this too. You and Katie should come play The Game-On Healthy Challenge with me (check out my site). It’s totally motivating to help you stick to goals just like this! It’s 6 weeks longs and definitely keeps you focused. Come play with me!
Ok, I’m in! I had the same Netflix experience and did an overhaul on my diet last year, but I have been struggling to keep on track. This will be a great kick-start and hey, it’s always nice to have friends help you along the way 🙂 Thanks!
That’s so cool, someday I really need to try and get on the raw food thing.
Would love to try! Our youngest was just diagnosed with sone food allergies so this would be a great kick start to cleaner living!
Yes please! What a great idea!
Count me in! I am on clean nutrition (I HATE the word diet!) Always looking to be better.
