How To Use Slice In Cricut Design Space

This tutorial for how to use slice in Cricut Design Space will have you cutting shapes like a pro.

Slice is one of my favorite tools in Cricut design space. It is a little bit tricky to go about if you are brand new to Cricut design space. I was expecting to be able to just cut lines but it’s a bit different than that. You need to start out with a shape.

Typically I use a square for a straight line cut. But if you wanted to use a circle for a rounded line that is fine too. You can even use other images or text which we will talk about later.

The main thing you need to remember about slices that you can only slice two layers. So if you have more than two the slice icon will be grayed out.

You can use the ungroup button to take layers apart to find the two layers that you want to work with.

So, say you have a shape that you want to cut in half with a straight line. What you’re going to want to do is take that shape and also open a square from the shapes icon. I like to make the square into a draw line instead of a cut so that I can see through the square and see how its lining up. Once you get the line of the square where you want to cut your shape highlight both layers, the square and the shape, and click the slice icon.

You will have a few layers after you do this. You will have your square, your shape, and the cutouts from both. Simply delete the pieces you don’t need and you have completed cutting out your shape.

If you want to use text as your slice image that one is simple as well. Say you want to make a tag with a word cut out. So open a tag from the images button or a rectangle, a circle, whatever you want your tag to be shaped like. Then type out your text and put it on your tag where you want to cut it out.

Simply highlight your tag and your text and click slice. Again you’ll have a few layers that will be extra and you will need to delete, but your tag will now have the text cut out of it.
