Last week I shared my personal quest to find an easily accessible frugal drug store LipSense alternative. This is the follow-up post on their long-lasting claims.
If you haven’t seen my previous post, Frugal Drug Store LipSense Alternatives (Part 1) be sure to check it out.
This week I am sharing my findings on how long these different long lasting lip colors stayed looking great on my lips. Let’s first review which products I tested.
- LipSense in Sheer Berry
- Maybelline Super Stay 24 Hour in Very Cranberry
- Revlon ColorStay Overtime in Keep Blushing
- Covergirl Outlast in Wild Berry
- Rimmel London Provacalips 16 Hour Kissproof Color in Wish Upon A Berry
- L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Last in Toujour Teaberry
- E.L.F. Aqua Beauty Radiant Gel Lip Tint in Dewy Berry
- E.L.F. Lip Stain in Berry Blush
So which ones were good and which ones were duds? Let’s see.
LipSense
As I said in my previous post, I have been 100% faithful to LipSense for seven and a half months. I really like the colors and I love that it’s smudge proof. I do have an issue with the bolder colors. They look great, for a few hours. Then the color on the corners of my top lip starts to wear off. My bottom lip looks great for hours and hours, but my top lip starts looking thinner and thinner as the color wears off the corners. I have tried using Icicle (the clear one) as a base layer between my lip and the colors. I have tried making sure my lip is
I have tried using Icicle (the clear one) as a base layer between my lip and the colors. I have tried making sure my lip is really, really dry for application. I have tried a combo. And after several months I should not still be exfoliating previous wax from other products. Especially since I never wore much on my lips anyway. Overall the color stays in place and lasts for hours. Most of the time I can get 8+ hours out of one application of color. With the exception of my upper lip. It may need a touch up depending on the color.
You apply the color in three layers and then a hydrating gloss over the top, both have a doe foot applicator. Check out my post on how to apply LipSense if you need some help.
Maybelline Super Stay 24 Hour
This was a good product. I would say that it wore about as well as LipSense does on me. I got about four hours before I had to touch up my top lip. It’s duel ended. One end is the color with a doe foot applicator and the other is a stick of some sort of chapstick.
Revlon ColorStay Overtime
I liked this product. The color was easy to apply. Then you just let it dry a few seconds before applying the gloss. Again it’s duel ended. One end is the color with a doe foot applicator and the other is a brush with the gloss.
Covergirl Outlast
This one I heard mixed reviews on. People said that it dried their lips out, but I didn’t experience that. What I did experience is 4 hours of lasting color and then it started to wear off of my top lip again. There are two separate color and gloss containers, each with a flocked applicator.
Rimmel London Provacalips
This one is great. I liked the color and it lasted several hours. It says 16 hours on it, and I believe it. I didn’t chart the exact times for it, but it’s one that I can put on in the morning and then scrub whatever is left off the next morning. It is double ended with flocked applicators for both the color and gloss.
L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Last
This was another really great one. It is doubled ended with a flocked applicator for the color and a stick of lip balm on the other end. It lasted all day long.
E.L.F. Aqua Beauty
This has a doe foot applicator and you need to apply thin layers. Mine didn’t last too long. Maybe a couple hours.
E.L.F. Lip Stain
This is a marker with a fine tip. I wish it were more rounded and less pointed. It looked great. For a few hours. I still had the color wear off my top lip corners. And a lot of it came off when I wiped my mouth after eating. It was a great color and give a very matte finish since it’s just a stain. I topped it with some gloss to give my lips some moisture. I would wear it again, but just know that it will need some touch-up. But for $2 it was pretty good.
So which ones were my favorites?
My top 3 picks are:
Revlon, Rimmel, and then Loreal. They all lasted for hours and hours, even with a lot of talking, eating, and drinking. Plus I only applied a top coat of gloss when I applied my makeup in the mornings. That was it. Then the color was on its own.
If you are looking for a long lasting lip color I highly recommend these. Be sure to check out my other beauty posts.

I don’t have any brochures for these lip colors. These are all ones that I purchased at Target, except the LipSense.

Hi. I came across your post online researching LipSense. I’ve finally decided to take the plunge and try the product after experimenting with the drug store brands a little. My first is on it’s way now. I actually came across someone who did a post like this similar to yours, because the price made me give the product a second thought as well. I have tried Revlon and Maybelline. Revlon, I couldn’t remember why, but I didn’t care for it. Maybe it didn’t work like I hoped it would for my particular lips. And Maybelline, one of mine stays on and the other flakes off (the one with the shimmer in it). Also, for some reason, I feel like it makes my lips super dry and chapped, even though I keep applying the balm (which I do really like) throughout the day. Did you notice a difference in the feeling of your lips with Maybelline vs. LipSense? I know everyone is different, but thought I would ask.
Amber Simmons says
I did not like the Maybelline one. It doesn’t stay on for me. Maybe it’s just the color. I haven’t tried a second one. I do like LipSense, I just have issues with colors not lasting very long. I think it just depends on the color no matter the brand. LipSense did make my lips super soft and hydrated. It is a good product.

Are you top picks in order of preference?
Amber Simmons says
Yes, they are. I have had consistent luck with Revlon and Rimmel more than the Loreal.

Hi! Have you noticed one of these drugstore brands that lasts after eating as well as Lipsense? So far as alternatives I’ve tried Sephora, Gerard, and Kat Von D. As soon as I eat something with a little oil, I find all my lipstick comes off on my napkin….which I hate!! That has never happened with Lipsense for me.
Amber Simmons says
I have had good luck with Rimmel and Revlon. I would say that they hold up to eating just as well as LipSense does on me.

I completely relate to your love of LipSense and how amazing it makes your lips feel/look. The gloss is awesome! I’ve tried the lip balm, but it doesn’t keep my lips as soft and full. Have you found any alternatives for the gloss itself? Going back to regular chapstick has been so disappointing. 😣
Amber Simmons says
I have not found a replacement. I usually just use the Rimmel color and balm and that’s it for the day.
